Negril advertises it's self as a destination for fun and weddings. The cost of an ambulance fully equiped is about 1% of the cost of the RIU's on Bloody Bay . One of the premier ambulance builder's in the world is in Yarmouth Nova Scotia so I called them on Fri aft . The company is named Tri-Star and they told me a FULL EQUIPED !!!!! ambulance is approx $600,000 . That is to top world standards with EVERYTHING !!!!!!!! being state of the art !!!!! Now just take the value of all the hotels etc. that are advertising all activites such as Rick's ,parasailing ,scuba diving etc . and add them all up . An ambulance is small potatoe's compared to the gross product value !!!! They want but they wouldn't pay !!!! They want to be the top destintion ,which require's changes to their thinking but always try to put the onus on the visitor/tourist and call it culture and respect . THIS IS A VACATION/ REST /CLEAR YOUR F****** HEAD . This is not summer camp for kids to make friend's IT'S a 3rd world country that should have health care for 1st response OR !!!!!!!!!! tell people they DON'T HAVE IT !!!!!! some people are still telling the masses that it's all good and safe .Just don't tell me it's 3rd world BECAUSE IT'S NOT !!!!! There are 1/2 BILLION $'s worth of hotels and THAT'S NOT 3RD world !!!!! Just imagine an empty O2 container ??? Where did the rest of it go ????

Like you said, there is plenty of money in Jamaica
But like here in the states, its all disproportionately in the hands of the rich and powerful while many of the rest suffer.
However - what's the use of a nice equipped ambulance if it brings you to that nightmare they call a hospital in Sav la Mar
The good thing about getting older is getting wiser and we can avoid many risks
but - the problem is - you need to take a risk simply to get from point A to point B in Jamaica and pray to God no reckless driver runs you down.

It's not so much to get you to Sav it's the ability of that type of ambulance to get you to MoBay or Kingston alive.!!!!! Again as a tourist we are being "rooked ,lied to , fooled , and I think laughed at " but for someone to just LIE !!!! and advertise that the services good and they are bad and say that "it is a 3rd world country " when Negril should be anything BUT !!!! 3rd world.But it's not getting a hospital " THAT'S FOR F****** SURE !!!!!

I visiti Mexico often, and Mexico is considered 2nd World. If Mexico is 2nd World, then Jamaica is clearly a Third World country.

I don't know but maybe it could be run by the hospital in MoBay ??? All I'm saying is that the cost is not that great !!! The point is that it is a lie that there are people available at the present time !!!
It just can't be "preached " anymore that there is something available !!!

Jitters..Unfortunetly you are correct . The thing that is wrong is THERE IS THE $'s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to get what they need . Running it ????? . Maybe rotating services from Canada ???? Maybe the ambulance could be leased. Just a thought . It is closer to come to the Caribbean to work than the East Coast going to the West Coast to work .

It is truly sad and disheartening that people are being given disinformation about the medical services. I'm not sure anything can be done about it but just to give correct information whenever possible. The admin over there never stepped in to point out anything about the ambulance that never showed up for this poor young man when he has in the past spoken up saying it is working smoothely. I understand your frustration, OT.

This whole concept of "worlds" is a tad outdated. The "PC" way to describe situations like this is a country is either developed, developing or undeveloped - and this is based on their economic status according to the World Bank and the IMF. Both Mexico and Jamaica are considered "developing" countries. The term "second world" was only used during the cold war to describe the Easter Bloc countries that were under the control of the Soviet Union - a more political than economic definition. If you go to places in Mexico such as Cancun, Cozumel, San Miguel, Playa etc. you can easily get the illusion that this is a "developed" country - its not, at least not according to the economic powers that be.
Well - that aside - under the category of things you should know about a place before you travel, one is definitely that economic status. I think vacationers are often fooled into thinking tropical destinations such as Negril are similar to or exactly the same as it is in North America. People forget they are traveling to a poor foreign country where the same rules do not apply. No matter which way you slice it, whether in a developed or developing country jumping off a 30' cliff is considered high risk. You are better off partaking in high risk behaviors in a country with a developed medical situation - right? Because Ricks looks and acts as it does it gives that illusion of Disneyland where anyone can fling themselves off a cliff into the sea and it will all be "OK". I think people really do forget what it is exactly that they are doing and what the consequences might be. If Ricks was located in Florida and was a theme park then all sorts of legalities and waivers and stuff would be shoved in your face before you did something like this and if an accident that resulted in death ocurred that "ride" would be shut down indefinitely. But...this is a foreign country. Its like running with the bulls in Spain - you are on your own.
I don't know that there is in fact "extra" money to improve the medical situation in Jamaica but I do know that we as visitors or non-voting residents can't do shit about it. As frustrating as it is, we have to live with what's always been - Jamaica is not a terrific place to get hurt.
