Treasure Beach project - JonTom - 07-16-2014

For TB fans/visitors - a project to build a sports complex.

"The project has seen contributions of $21,261,312 million from TEF"

Even in JA dollars, I suspect they meant either :
$21.261312 million from
or
$21,261,312 from

RE: Treasure Beach project - jeannieweenie - 07-16-2014

I have to give props to the Henzell's and many others for getting this project going. It's been a few years since I've been to TB but I still follow the news and stay in touch with people locally. It has become a HUGE success. If I recall correctly, he Williams sisters (tennis stars) were there during a training camp for the youth. I know that has never happened in my town. Who woulda thunk it that they would be in little old Treasure Beach?!

I remember years back (5-6) when this project started and people were upset about it. People said "it would never fly" and "the youth would just ruin it". It seems it has proven otherwise. I will visit this park when I am in TB in Feb and I am so happy there is a place like this in TB.

RE: Treasure Beach project - ohliz - 07-17-2014

My group last year thoroughly enjoyed the boxing match we attended there. Such a nice vibe, so many people - families, older folks, teens - and the matches were well staged. The park is really lovely. Tennis courts and b-ball courts are really well maintained. The local kids play cricket and foot ball there.

There is a climbing wall/obstacle course thing that is named for Colin Powell, I assume he had something to do with raising funds for it.

IMO Treasure beach and BREDs are a terrific model for what can be done in Jamaica to benefit many, not just the few.
