MBJ runway expansion is back on again (maybe).
Who knows when/if construction would start, but I imagine there may be some impact on current operations (unless they do it all at night?)

I question the 'return on investment.' The story says part of the 60 million USD will be to extend the runway and allow (fully loaded) planes from Moscow. I'm sure they mean TO, when the tanks are full. It's a 12/14 hour flight if direct. Perth is an hour extra flight time.
See below for details of a flight. Airfair seems cheap. You really have to want to fly there to sit for 12 hours, but changing planes gives your butt a rest.
Some of the $ will be to upgrade the terminal. A far cry from a mobile home/trailer in the field, and more upgrades came thereafter including the million dollars per gate so as to not use the stairs. I have to be for progress, but it is my money they are spending. The longer runway is only part, and we have no say in any aspect but I'm hopeful some of it will be good.
Tangent; I remember when they leased the airport to the Canadians and knew the fees would increase. But this item from the story is news to me:
MBJ Airports is a consortium of Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico from Mexico with 74.5 per cent interest, and Vantage of Canada with 24.5 per cent. It operates the airport under a 35-year concession agreement.
