Charitable Donation vs. JA bureaucracy - JonTom - 09-09-2016 I've never tried to ship donations to JA, but have read about lengthy processes for obtaining things like a drivers license or land title, so I guess this doesn't surprise me much. A shame really. An old timer way back when on the happy news board said that donations were not getting to where they were supposed to go. I forget if it was a way to sweet talk customs out of charging duty, but government imposed or got stricter for the requirement for approval before items landed. And this person said that the delays to get the required paperwork approved was not quick or painless. Think auto parts. Without permits, the items are subject to being kept. Import a car with false docs and you both lose it and pay the tax too. Maybe the washing machine could be diverted. Loss of import duty. Maybe Customs wants a follow-up check and a guarantee. I can see why problems develope but with the stink in the newspaper, just send an official with a clip board and a can of spray paint with the container. How old is the 'cut off the nose to spite the face' ?  How disappointing a story, and a legit reaction by the shipper. Ah, that's J$600 a day for one years storage to Port Handlers. Pay or forfit the whole load. Betcha.
