RE: Reggae Girlz - Westenders - 06-07-2019 Big ups to cedilla for fighting the fight for women’s football I remember when my kids were younger and the reggae boys played in the FIFA World Cup In our city the Jamaican community came out on masse to watch the games on big screens, all generations Let’s hope people get behind the girls as well There is a lot of support and momentum around women’s football over here... bout time too RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-08-2019 World Cup match on Sunday against Brazil. https://www.espn.com/soccer/fifa-womens-world-cup/story/3870942/marta-thigh-to-miss-brazils-opener-vs-jamaica RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-08-2019 The "Reggae Girlz" of Jamaica are the underdogs of this year's Women's World Cup. The Jamaican women's national soccer team debuts on Sunday, June 9 at the tournament in France against a highly-rated team from Brazil. FIFA, soccer's global governing body, ranks the Jamaicans the lowest among the 24 teams at the tournament. But don't try to tell that to any of the players. "Football is a very funny thing," says Jamaican midfielder Deneisha "Den-Den" Blackwood. "You can never predict what's going to happen. And I feel like we are going to be the team to shock everybody in this World Cup." Just five years ago, Jamaica didn't even have a women's national soccer team. Now they're the first team from the Caribbean to ever qualify for a Women's World Cup. https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/06/08/730413093/jamaica-didn-t-really-care-about-soccer-then-came-the-reggae-girlz RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-08-2019 Kingston (Jamaica) (AFP) - They don't have tons of money, sponsors or flashy practice facilities but they didn't let that stop them: Jamaica's 'Reggae Girlz', the women's national football team that did not even exist a few years ago, are heading to France to do battle for the World Cup. With the help of the daughter of late reggae legend Bob Marley, the team -- the first from the Caribbean to make it to the finals -- are ready to compete for the sport's Holy Grail. Before heading to France, the Reggae Girlz gave their fans something to celebrate with a 3-1 victory over Panama at the National Stadium in Kingston on May 19. The friendly was only part of the day, which turned into a colorful Sunday street party, complete with blaring vuvuzelas and blasting dancehall music. But the festivities did not mask the difficult task ahead -- the Reggae Girlz stand only 53rd in the world in FIFA's rankings, and on paper, they are clearly the weakest squad in the draw. The players are certainly aware of their humble pedigree: the stadium's malfunctioning scoreboard and malfunctioning sound system symbolize where they stand in terms of the world's top teams. https://news.yahoo.com/jamaicas-underdog-reggae-girlz-ready-world-cup-103552354--sow.html RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-08-2019 OVIEDO, Fla. — One afternoon 4½ years ago, Rob Kammel was in the one-story bungalow he rents for his graphic design firm when Hue Menzies — a former soccer player, financial analyst and math teacher — led him to the tree-canopied gravel lot out back. “I heard this noise, and I see this Jamaican food truck roll onto the property,” he recalled. “I thought I was going to hyperventilate. Oh, my God, what is this thing?” That thing, decorated with sketches of Usain Bolt and other island track stars, carried jerk chicken, rice and peas, and plantains for 20-some girls and women. The Jamaican national women’s soccer team had just practiced on a nearby municipal field, and they were hungry. “Make them feel at home,” Menzies, the unpaid head coach, recalled before releasing a deep chuckle. Starting June 7, Jamaica will join 23 other countries competing in the month-long tournament in nine French cities. The lowest-ranked team in the field, the Reggae Girlz might not earn a point in group-stage matches against Brazil, Italy and Australia. That is beside the point. Their journey proved what a little support and a lot of belief could accomplish. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/05/31/reggae-girlz-jamaica-backed-by-cedella-marley-make-world-cup/?utm_term=.504caf5cfb52 RE: Reggae Girlz - Westenders - 06-08-2019 England were the underdogs in the last World Cup And ended up coming third , so who knows ? England also has the footballer slated as the best in the world Let’s hope jamaica and England do well in their matches on Sunday RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-09-2019 Brazil's Cristiane scored a hat-trick as the former finalists sealed a superb 3-0 victory over women's World Cup debutants Jamaica on Sunday to kick off their campaign in style. https://www.espn.com/soccer/undefined https://www.espn.com/soccer/match?gameId=529211&ex_cid=espnapi_internal RE: Reggae Girlz - Firemon - 06-10-2019 Jamaica continues its first-ever Women’s World Cup appearance Friday at noon EST against Italy, which will mark Jamaica’s second match of the group stage. https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mls/article231303088.html |
