200 Best Singers - Firemon - 01-04-2023 Five Jamaicans have made Rolling Stone Magazine’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list, published on January 1. Dennis Brown, arguably reggae's most influential vocalist, heads the quintet at number 67. Luciano is named at 143, Barrington Levy at 119, Bob Marley at 98 and Toots Hibbert at 94, complete the Jamaican presence on the controversial list that sees soul legend Aretha Franklin at number one, followed by Whitney Houston at number two and Sam Cooke at three. https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/entertainment/rolling-with-the-best/ If you haven't heard there's considerable outrage over the fact Canadian singer Celine Dion wasn't included. So, there's that for comparison. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-singers-all-time-1234642307/ RE: 200 Best Singers - Firemon - 01-04-2023 Barrington Levy has been a major player in the Reggae and Dancehall scene for 40 years. BBC Radio 1Xtra's David Rodigan travels to the home of Barrington's Record Company and Radio station in the heart of the Jamaica hills, to talk and sing about his influences, biggest hits and current projects. RE: 200 Best Singers - Negril75 - 01-04-2023 Well everybody has their own opinions on the 200 Best Singers. Who should and shouldn't be included. How is it possible that Jimmy Cliff isn't included as one of the 200 Best Singers???? Come on people!! Talk about vocal range and career longevity!! Most know the story of Jimmy wanting his fair share as an artist and performer and as such Chris Blackwell promoted Bob Marley instead..... Holder of the Order of Merit, Member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and songs like "Many Rivers To Cross", You Can get It if You really Want", "The Harder They Come", "Wonderful World, Beautiful People", "Vietnam". Forget about his acting career especially as Ivan in the "Harder They Come" RE: 200 Best Singers - Firemon - 01-04-2023 Ay true! Big Ups Ivan O. Martin. You can get it if you really want it, but you must try, try and try, to succeed at last! RE: 200 Best Singers - Firemon - 01-05-2023 Now a few questions if you don't mind. Did you make your first visit to Negril in 1975? (Other possibility you've made the trip 75 times!) Are you Canadian? (See also next question.) Were you able to show Jimmy the proper form for a slapshot? Not a question but just reinforcing your commentary about Jimmy standing up to the powers that be. RE: 200 Best Singers - Negril75 - 01-05-2023 [attachment=3039] First visit to Jamaica (Negril) April, 1975 Born In The USA Yep showed Jimmy the basics for a slapper First met him on an Air Jamaica flight from JFK To MoBay in 1980 and subsequently met him several times later in Germany and New York. I was fortunate to have photographed him in Concert several times from the front row area |
