He's been around a long time . Many years ago he was collapsed on the beach and myself and a friend picked him up and took him to shelter at one legged Benson's ( now isn't that ironic ) and got him hydrated , feed and feeling better . This took a few hours and he said he hadn't eaten in 2 days . He had his old guitar with him and I had a new set of strings back at my place so I went back and got them for him .
When I saw him on the beach for years I would offer him water and a bite to eat . I never once saw him begging . People thought he was " gone in the head " but really he was VERY !!! down on his luck . He use to call me Suggie .

Interesting story OT, There is a guy we know and he says people think he is "gone in the head" but he likes it that way since people don't mess with him because of that assumed reason. Actually he is a pretty smart guy and never, never asked for anything and always says hello when we see him.

I concur OT, Herman's mental faculties are fine, he's just been beaten down by life and yet refuses to give up.

Hoping folks who see this will be extra generous should they get an opportunity to hail him for a song as he walks down the beach.

Wendy ( the photographer ) has stories of " beach workers " and LOTS !!! of pics . Start diggin' Wendy .

Although this doesn't relate to Herman mentioning Wendy as the beach photographer I remember well an older gentleman who used to sell conch shells and other shells on Negril Beach. I remember also huge piles of discarded conch shells from what must have been conch fishermen periodically along the beach. Does anyone have old photos of the shell salesman or piles of conch shells?

I appreciate…well actually I love hearing experiences like this. “sigh” I mean, this touched me to the core as I visualized your recount. Got me wanting to hear more. Many people visit often but rarely befriend a Jamaican let alone lend a helping hand when they see the opportunity like you and your friend…without hesitation and without judgement.
