PA trip #4 - suzengrace - 04-16-2013

Always wanted to see Reich falls..heard it was the most beautiful..well leaving our place early mon.morning I'd forgotten they were closed on sun/mon..as we driving up to the main turnout guys were telling us its closed, and we approached one man sitting in his car-he said he could take us there-would charge the same as at the falls (1000 j pp.) we negotiated $1000 total and took our chances and followed him on the road for awhile til he said theres his wife she will take us in..so we drive little bit longer and pullover..her family works for the man that owms most of the reich falls..the Jam government owns the main fall area(and you will see the rope going across the one picture) everything above that is Govt.land -everything below owned privately..She led us to a gate -had keys to open the lock and then we go down a long winding path..get to portion of the bottom of the falls-and it was TRUE paradise-so beautiful that mineral water with no other tourists..we were allowed to follow her up to the main fall and go past the ropes for a little awhile...then we went back down were this a large swimming area..It was highlight of my trip..if you dont have tough feet(i dont) they will help navigate you but better to rent those water shoes..anyway-you want see reich fall and only have sun or mon dont let that deter you..

driving to the falls

opening the gate

down the winding and looong path

everything above that rope in the wata is govt. owned...to be honest i'd probably prefer to go when it was open to public, they have nice facilities with lockers, etc..me and partner weren't completely as eased being the only ones around and not knowing these people..Thank god it all worked out -but still would rec. when it was "officially" opened..We took a big chance ..
Ok on to some pics of long bay beach that was near and within walking distance to our place..

My favorite beach in Jam is Winnifred beach- its not the easiest to find or get to (the roads are the worse) but worth it..It was a bleaky, stormy day so my pics dont do the place justice at all. they have a few local cook shops, buy beers, etc and some really excellent vendors with unique ,well made crafts..we were approached by total of 3..that was the most in
any time in PA..I;m sure there some folks out there that have better pics of the place..

Boston bay beach is another fav..they have surfers there !!! and you can rent boards get lessons..its right next door to great huts accomadations and next door to the birthplace of Jerk....a lane with many cooks vying for your attention and $$ to spend on their BEST jerk...well we selected one at the end and had soe of the best chicken (me) fish-very large done to perfection as well as some lobster, festival, sweet potatoe,etc..yes, they charge tourist prices (most meals in PA are so cheap compared to other places) but it was worth it. seriously, the chicken just melted off the bone-
De bar in Negril is one of my top places for jerk-but even they dont have anything on this place...it was that good....

The birthplace of jerk...

fresh cocunut juice..

just a few of the fabulous villas that dot the hills all over PA area..The one thing i love about PA is it has the old-skool Jam. vibe-even though many of the fantastic places are run-down and shabby (in the town center of PA-OUTSTANDING architecture going to ruin) It just has another worldly type vibe to it that you'd never get in Negril, mobay,etc..There are alot more Europeans there for sure-and more of the adventurous traveler type.
Must of been quite a place when Errol Flynn ruled the area-his widow still there with a modest home overlooking the many hundreds of acres of land she owns..
driving on the way back to Trelawny we kept looking for a cook shop with easy access for me to get in and out of..WE had to look no further than this excellent place in Annotto bay..Forget the Rastas name that runs it put its one of the best run and cleanest shops I've been to not to mention the most excellent meal..His partner, who makes baskets also sells fresh squeezed juice-it varies day to day.. We were lucky to have the sorrell (also had carrot juice) it was ice cold and refreshing...Make sure you stop in for a bite if in the area-it's well worth it..
Thats it for this trip--i didnt do any kind of justice to the beauty that one encounters in PA..you just need to go there yourself..lots of good peeps on this board can give advice for traveling there,etc...a true tropical paradise ,with a relaxed jam vibe....

Re: PA trip #4 - Schuttzie - 04-16-2013

Winnifred Beach is my favorite, too! I love the vibe it has and the vendors were always so nice to us and looked out for our girls who would run around the whole beach. We were anxious the first time there letting the kids run around but soon learned differently and became friends with many.
Boston has the best jerk chicken and fish. We absolutely loved it. So glad that you got see so much on your trip. Thank you for sharing with us!

Re: PA trip #4 - sammyb - 04-16-2013

Heart be still....those Boston and Winnifred photos fed my soul and you even stopped in AB...that place has the best fish tea and they seem to ALWAYS be open. Lovely report and photos...thanks so very much for sharing.

Re: PA trip #4 - RGondaRoad - 04-16-2013

Your photos of the falls brings back nice memories. We did the same thing you did - went in with that same woman the same way. It was fun. I still need to make it to Blue Lagoon (when we asked the owners of our guest house, BL or RF, they unanimously encouraged RF) and Winnifred Beach. Also the pix of the beach in Long Bay - again, nice memories, we spent a good amount of time in that spot too!

Re: PA trip #4 - booger - 04-16-2013

"i think i may be wasting my time-cuz I feel people more interested in Negril..I just hope my pics will encourage those who are thinking to make a jump the "da other side " of the island.. "
I really enjoyed your report and I for one look forward to the day I visit PA. Great pictures and just enough commentary to keep it interesting.

Re: PA trip #4 - Sophie - 04-16-2013

NO suzengrace! Not wasting your time. I have looked and looked at your pics and loved them. I'm just a dumb ass sometimes and forget to post and say thank you for taking the time and letting me tag along. Thank you!!

Re: PA trip #4 - Tim - 04-16-2013

Reading reports of that area really get my attention as that is where I hope to spend at least half our next trip to the island. I love Negril but there is so much more to Jamaica.

Re: PA trip #4 - oldtimer - 04-17-2013

Really nice "tag along" report !!!!!! you did a GREAT !!!! job !!!! The east end of Jamaica is a wonderful place to hang. It WAS !!! where all the "young turks" hung "in the day".
