Part 11 - Antigua and Montserrat - jeannieb - 04-25-2013
<P>I'm on a roll tonight so I'm gonna finish this off. Hope you all don't mind me spamming the front page of Jamericans.<P>Saturday April 20th.<P>Matt and I went to Cambusa for breakfast. We both had the English Breakfast. It was toast, 2 eggs, pork belly, beans, and coffee. Matt had coffee black and I had cappuccino (2 actually). Total was $72ec.<P>After breakfast Terry showed up so we could start our day of touring our side of the island. We had a rum punch before we left.<P>Our first stop was The Donkey Sanctuary. It is ran by the Humane Society of Antigua. It is home to over 150 donkeys. Some come in injured, abused, hit by cars, or just wild donkeys that are captured after eating local crops or chasing people.<P>Matt and I adopted Pumpkin. Terry adopted Stevie. It cost $25usd a year to help vet and feed them. You get an "official" adoption certificate and a Christmas card from your donkey.<P>After the Donkey Sanctuary we went to Devil's Bridge. The sea was very rough. Some waves, Terry guessed at being 10-12 ft high. We didn't cross the bridge today. If you were swept out, there was no saving you.<P>Next on the agenda was Half Moon Beach. The beach was beautiful. We stopped at Terry's friend's bar. His name is Smiley. He has saved for 20+ years to pay the government to let him open his little bar on the beach. He had to pay for light and water to be ran.<P>We stopped first at his main bar and had lunch and rum punches.<P>We went on to the beach and tried boogie boarding but the waves were way too rough. I lost my top. I really hope the guys next to us weren't looking. Terry said I was under the water and you couldn't see anything. Good!<P>Matt walked along the cliffs to the other side of the bluff. Terry and I found the mud/clay puddles and covered ourselves. We let it dry. The boys that were on the beach showed up. We told them to mud up and they did. Matt came back and we made him "mud up". He did. Then we all went into the calm area of the beach and rinsed off. It was so awesome. The sand felt like silk, the water was warm and calm and our skin felt amazing.<P>After our "spa" we went back to Smiley's for another rum punch. We went back to the hotel after that.<P>Joe had the BBQ all set up and planned when we arrived. Matt and Terry went to the store to get beer and smokes for everyone. Terry surprised us with a bottle of Dom Perignon. The food was really good. Joe made a dill sauce for the fish and potatoes and it was delicious. He also grilled some fresh beets that were fantastic. I never liked beets but these were great!<P>We stayed up till 11:30. It was a fun day. Crossroads was started by Eric Clapton to help people with addiction. The people are allowed to come to the beach and have 1 soda. They have to learn how to have 1 and enjoy it while being around other people drinking booze. They are not allowed to order more than 1. Crossroads is free to Antiguans but very costly for foreigners. Whitney Houston was a frequent visitor and rumour has it that Bobby would smuggle drugs in.<P>Smiley's main bar<P><a <P>what a wonderful day...<P>You brought me back to a forgotten memory...<BR>When I was much younger (back in the 1970's) I used to live and work on Martha's Vineyard during the summers - there was a privately owned beach we used to sneak into that had this amazing clay pool in the dunes. There was a fresh water spring that came up and created the pool. People would fully emerge themselves in the pool and come out looking like monsters - there were places to slide down the dune and many people would be roll around in the pool at once. - it was so much fun. After cleaning off the mud in the sea ones skin would be so soft - I bet it was similar to your experience.<P>I dont want this to end ;-(
