In 2015, Billboard magazine proclaimed Prince's halftime show at Dolphins Stadium the greatest performance in the history of the event. Undeterred by a driving rain, Prince played the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic "Proud Mary," Jimi Hendrix's iconic version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" and his own hits, "Let's Go Crazy" and "1999." The climax was his performance of "Purple Rain" as showers created the perfect stage for his unique flair for the dramatic.

Purple Reggae is a track-for-track take on the Prince masterpiece, with guests like Citizen Cope, UB40's Ali Campbell, The Slits' Hollie Cook, Deborah Bonham and Beverly Knight. Most notably, Sinead O' Connor, who shot to the top of the pop charts with her rendition of the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U," joined Radio Riddler for the seventh track "I Would Die 4 U."

This was the scene outside First Avenue (the club where Purple Rain was shot) last night in Minneapolis. Not that many famous musicians hail from Minnesota but being represented by Prince and Bob Dylan isn't too shabby.

I was in that crowd Thursday night, and I also went down last night when I knew the crowd would be much smaller. It was quite a celebration for a fantastic artist. I met couples from London and Los Angeles that flew in just to join the festivities.
I will post some photos if I can figure out how to make them small enough to be viewed properly here. |
