Jimmy Cliff
(CD, " REBIRTH"
This is reposted from a post from Firemon (thank you !! Firemon !!), for anyone who is up late tonight, watch the David Letterman show, Jimmy Cliff will be on, LONG time Jamaican singer and star, I think it was in something like 1965 or so that he and his group represented Jamaica at the World's Fair in New York City. And of course in one of the first Jamaican movies to gain popularity worldwide.
One of Jamaica's first singers (aside from Milly Small) to gain popularity and worldwide recognition in the early early days of the music. I was a kid when Milly Small's 45" hit the radio stations as a big hit and me and my 10 year old girlfriend would sing along with our little transitor radios. "My girl lollipop"
Just to remind everyone to give thanks for their health, this particular friend of mine from my childhood.... "Nancy" -- as adults we only connected sporadically and then 15 years or so ago discovered we worked in the same complex and would talk about the stupid things we did as kids (like start a fire at one end of a culvert and with a burlap bag to capture a woodchuck)... ride a wild horse with both of us on the horse "Charlie" who was a payment to the psychiatrist who owned the farm and how the horse would immediately canter to the nearest low tree to swipe us off his back... catching in the stream crayfish under the rocks, going into one of the many many apple orchards and eating 10 apples, thieving a couple of chickens from the chicken farm where they had 5,000 plus chickens and then discovering our "pet chickens" we kept in the woods in a crate obviously eaten by foxes...
Anyways, about four years ago I called my friend, in our childhood we spent the summers in the Gloucester/Rockport MA area all summer long. She continued the habit as did I -- I called her up to ask her the name of a place and to see if she would be there when I was & she told me her story... driving home from work one day, all of a sudden "everything was DOUBLE" ... She went to her primary physician, had tests at the local hospital, as she walked in the door of her home her phone was ringing (after her test). She had a massive brain tumor that needed to be operated on asap. RIP after a long and brave battle.
Just thinking of Jimmy Cliff reminded me of Millie Small who reminded me of my childhood friend....
