Wednesday April 17th
We got out of bed about 7:30. Samuel and Loraine (our neighbors) offered to take us to Galion beach with them for a morning swim. We took them up on the offer. They are nice people. He is a Dr. of engineering and she is a minister. They are from S. Africa but live in Ireland. It threw us of when they said they lived in Ireland but their accents were not. She said they get that a lot.
Galion Beach is really nice. It is in English Harbor. The water is clear and not as murky as Falmouth. Not as many boats in port on this side. The Antigua Inn is a posh resort that shares this beach. It looks waaayyy too fancy ($$$$).
When we got back to the hotel room, our neighbors invited us to have breakfast with them. They are leaving this afternoon so they are trying to use up all the food they have left over.
Breakfast was great. We had toast with butter and jam. OJ, coffee with milk and sugar a fine selection of cheeses. Matt and I brought sardines and crackers....it was the only thing we had. Luckily, they are sardine fans. After we ate, they gave us all of the food, drinks and condiments that were left over.
We exchanged info with each other in case we are ever in each others neck of the woods. She wants to see the mid-west to see cows and the birds we have. We told them they are more than welcome to visit.
I stopped in at the office at The Catamaran to arrange our day trip to The Grand Pineapple resort. The girls in the office called for me. The woman they spoke to at the resort said it was $75usd pp. I knew it was only $60. When I mentioned it, the price went down to $60. The girls at the Catamaran are so nice and accommodating. They got everything set up for us.
Matt and I walked to Cambusa for an afternoon drink. Cambusa is absolutely wonderful. It is decorated so nicely, cater to the yachts but they make everyone feel welcome. The owners are from Italy and they are all so nice and friendly. One thing about Cambusa is...it is affordable but it can also be pricey. We ordered 4 drinks and it was $120ec. That's only about $10usd a drink and we did get top shelf in 2 of the drinks...so it's not all that expensive when you think about it.
Terry was taking her friend home when she spotted us. She told us to hop in the car with our drinks. The guys at Cambusa were ok with it so off we went. After dropping off her shipmate, Terry drove us to the ruins of Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights. The views were amazing! You can see Eric Clapton's house, Montserrat (on a clear day), English Harbor, Falmouth Harbor and more. We went back to the dock and Cambusa where we had another drink. These drinks were only $5usd (not top shelf). I met a woman at the boat supply shop that raises tortoises. I got to hold them. We invited Terry to go to dinner with us and we planned to meet at 7pm.
We met at Cambusa for dinner. Matt and I both ordered the lobster grilled. The chef said it was much better boiled so that's what we got. The lobster was served with peppered tomato in a balsamic oil, homemade mayonnaise and a mixture of greens. They serve fresh caught from a lobster trap under the dock. Sometimes when you order lobster, there are none in the trap, so it's hit and miss. Terry told the chef to surprise her. She got a homemade bolognese sauce with pasta and homemade sausage.
We started with eggplant parmesan and beef carpaccio. The carpaccio was the best I have ever had in my life. I am craving it right now. Dinner was served with homemade focaccia bread and was finished with a shot glass of homemade limoncello. I think that this meal was one of the best I have ever had in my life. The service was impeccable. The waitress was a lot of fun. She is from Jamaica and we talked a lot about there. We showed her our pictures on my phone. She said we made her even more homesick. It's been 14 years since she left. Dinner was pricey but not any more than you'd pay at home for a nice night out and it was totally worth every cent. We will go back!
After dinner, Terry took us to English Harbor. We went to the ATM, which was really creepy. It is across from the police station but in a series of corridors where the market is held on the weekends. Anyway, there have been a few at-gunpoint-robberies in the last few months. A few women have been assaulted and men pistol whipped. Matt and I both walked with Terry and kept ourselves on high alert the entire time.
We walked around the historic dockyards of Lord Horatio Nelson. The place is fantastic. There is a place called Copper and Lumber that is a hotel and restaurant. It was like walking back in time. We wandered all around and noticed security was tight. We found out that Princess Beatrix is on the Royal ship in the harbor to watch the Classic Regatta this weekend.
While we were walking on the dock, Terry ran into a "kinda big deal" Captain of a pretty famous boat. He is a very distinguished gentleman. His boat is docked next to The Royal ship. He was very nice to Matt and I and Terry told him that we wanted to go sailing. He told us to meet him at On Deck Sailing school the following morning at 8:30am and he'd get us set up. Another score, thanks to Terry! We had planned to go to Grand Pineapple the following day but if we could get on a boat, GP could wait.
We walked back through the historic dockyard when a manager or someone stopped us. I thought we were in trouble but he said that anyone that visits has to play a few rounds of "toss the ring on the hook" game at the bar. We played a few round but didn't win.
We wandered down to the docks at English Harbor. There is a huge party going on that kicks off the Classic's race. Terry bought a round of G&T's for us. She said that this party was like the Oscar party of sailing. Matt and I were awestruck. It was amazing to be partying surrounded by billions of dollars in yachts. It's hard not to gawk. The mega yacht The Maltese Falcon was our backdrop! Since we planned this trip, I have been infatuated with The Maltese Falcon. The party closed about 11am.
We got home and had a few more drinks on the veranda. We met our neighbor Joe. He is from Louisiana. His Uncle owns the yacht Adventurous that will be racing in the Regatta. Joe is a good ole' boy and we really liked him. He is a coffee importer and often travels to Nicaragua. From the stories he told us, I don't think I want to visit there anytime soon. We went to bed about 1am.
Galion Beach

English Harbor from Galion

The nice couple we met that brought us

A bug orgy we found on the beach.
