OT, restaurants are nice and we do go out several times but we also like to cook and eat in just like we do at home since we have a room with a kitchenette.

Different story . You are starting to spend WAY !!!!!! more travelling than the average vacationer . But when it's 2-3 weeks ,different mind set for me .

We like to shop at Hi Low, I like my 2 liter size bottle of Ting which is hard to find elsewhere, they also have good prices on beer and Rum cream. They take Canadian money for purchases which is super handy... buy beer, pay with a hundred $ bill = get your Jamaican $$ for the day. One meal per day is usually at the room. Nothing like the smell of bacon cooking with a fresh mug of hot coffee and Rum Cream. Plus there is the added comfort of your own private bathroom and your personal choice of music or quiet during your meal.

All good points . But when you spend 8 months a year in a working boat for 55 years and you sleep , work , eat , washroom facilities all within 10ft of each other the last thing I want is food in my room . Having said that 4 years ago when I rented a villa ,we had a cook onsite and it was wonderful !!!! But this was like a giant house , lots of places to go with no smells . I guess it's what ever floats your boat...no pun intended...hehehe

We stay for a month, and as much as I love not cooking, eating out for a solid month doesn’t appeal to me. Grocery stores are a good thing. Some years I even come up with meal ideas before we arrive. We have been going to Negril since 1999,and have always had a kitchen.

If I was staying a month or more I would certainly do some cooking .Not cooking beats having the smell of food in my place .BUT !!!!! having said that a nice cup of coffee in the morning sure is nice at the table outside my door .

I spend a good half a year on the road for work in hotels. Eating out gets really old especially in cities where a fancy/good restaurant is Olive Garden or Red Lobster.
For the 9 months I'm home between travel and work and I hardly ever get my "cook on". Combine that with frantic dieting, here in Negril I pull out all the stops. Tonight I'll be making a Moroccan Fish Stew. Yesterday's farmer's market was a real treat. I totally get being on vacation and not going near a stove to cook anything. I know I'm unusual in that way. As far a being involved or concerned about "city planning" - you'd have to have known Negril as the small village it was prior to 2000 to fully appreciate the concern. Growth here - population, construction - has been incredibly fast paced and prolific. A town that once had a population (full time) of 5,000 now teeters at around 30,000. More tourists pour into Negril, filling those expanded hotels at a record pace each year since the highway from MoBay was completed. The result is that infrastructure that was sufficient in 1995, 1998 and 1999 is obsolete as of and before 2018. It affects EVERYTHING here from water to power to internet. We have not had Flow internet or land lines for example for 3 weeks - with no restore date in sight. So this is always the concern of residents and visitors because construction and growth never takes infrastructure into account here. So there's always going to be a huge groan when something new like this is announced. The thing with this particular shopping plaza is that is shouldn't negatively affect infrastructure as much since its an existing structure that is being refurbished and re-inhabited....a much better alternative to new construction.
